Art On The Rise Scheduled For April 25

  • Monday, April 13, 2015

Art on the Rise: A Celebration of Young Artists is a regional student art exhibit showing through April 25 in the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School Gallery. Participating schools include Baylor School, McCallie School, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School, and Webb School. Students and community members can attend an exciting day of workshops and talks by professional artists on Saturday, April 25.

Juror Mira Gerard, a 1986 graduate of St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School, will offer the keynote address at 9:15 a.m. in McCrory Hall for the Performing Arts. Mira is a professor in the Department of Art and Design at Eastern Tennessee State University.

Workshops on Saturday, April 25 will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are required to attend the workshops. The cost is $10, which includes lunch. No prior experience is necessary to attend a workshop. The workshops include:

Paul Ward, Composition in Photography: Every photographer is responsible for what ends up their photographs. Learn techniques and approaches that professional photojournalists use when deciding what to include in the composition of an image and what to omit. These framing decisions are critical to developing your craft as a photographer. Participants will have photography assignments and work will be assessed during the workshop. Class requirements: digital camera (with freshly charged battery) and memory card. Laptop could be helpful, but not required. Any digital camera will work, does not have to be SLR. Smartphone cameras are acceptable, but camera with removable memory card is preferred.

Kimerlen Moore, STEAM and Art Education: In this workshop, an assortment of materials that are unique to the elementary classroom will be introduced and several projects using these materials will be completed. A cardboard sculpture project based on Alexander Calder's work will be one of these projects, in addition to two different printmaking approaches and a Matisse lesson integrating math, science, and art.

Jim Ann Howard, Redefining the Portrait: In this workshop, participants will complete a self-portrait with marginal annotations. Students will learn about obelism - the practice of using obelos, coronis, diples, and other archaic shorthand editorial symbols, to indicate corrections, emendations, deletions, and additions. These will be used as marginal design elements to augment and in some instances actually obscure the annotation. The works will combine drawing, painting, and writing to expand the idea of what exactly constitutes a self-portrait.

Judy Condon, Mask Making in Clay: Our faces convey so much meaning without a word being uttered—so much psychological weight just with the lift of an eyebrow or the furrow of a brow. Facial expressions are powerful conveyors of meaning. In this mask-making workshop, we will explore how to use clay expressively to form a mask with facial features, textures, and colors that all together tell a story without words.

Greg Pond, Introduction to 3D Printing: This workshop will introduce the basics of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D Printing. Students will learn how to create CAD models with software and a 3D scanner that are suitable for printing. This class will provide an overview of the range of possibilities offered by 3D printing and related new technologies.

The Art on the Rise Celebration day will end with a public reception for the exhibition from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the SAS Gallery.

St. Andrew's-Sewanee School invited teachers and students of area schools to submit up to 20 pieces of 8-12 grade art. Each school could submit up to 20 pieces. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works were eligible. Mira selected 44 works from 77 entries to be exhibited. She will announce the Merit awards during the Celebration.
