Bayo Fasipe, a junior boarder from Springfield, Mo., is an alternate for his third-place paper, which was also named Best Statewide Project in African-American history.
Eight of Dr. Duke Richey’s AP United States History students competed at the state National History Day competition in Nashville and three McCallie students have advanced to the national competition in June at the University of Maryland.
Turner Colocotronis, a senior from Knoxville, won first place in the individual website category for, "The Terrible Swift Sword: William Brownlow and Reconstruction in Tennessee," and juniors Ryan McGregor and Jiahao Guo took second in group documentary for, "Liberator of Finland: Carl Mannerheim, the Finnish Resistance, and the Emergence of a Nation."
In addition, junior Bayo Fasipe from Springfield, Mo., is an alternate for nationals after his third-place finish in individual paper for "Alex Haley, Roots, and the Re-Invention of Black History," which also was named best statewide project in African-American history.
"This is yet another example of McCallie guys taking on a demanding side academic project when they already have so much that they are doing,” Dr. Richey said. “What they accomplished this year was impressive and reflected nicely on the school.”
Dr. Richey’s students were among more than 7,000 participants statewide who competed at the regional level in one of Tennessee’s six regions, including every member of Dr. Richey’s AP U.S. History course, who were all required to submit at least a paper to the competition as part of the class requirements.
The other students who competed at the state NHD competition were:
Junior Michael Brown, individual exhibit, "Socialist Cinderella: The Politics of Walt Disney"
Sophomore and freshman brothers Parker and Nic Norton of Palmdale, Calif., group exhibit, "The Kellogg Brothers and the Evolution of Food"
Junior day student Ace Damodaran, individual paper, "The Wright Brothers: Geography from the Heavens"
National History Day offers competition in five categories: research paper, documentary film, website, poster board exhibit and performance, with all except the paper having individual and group winners. The top two in each category advance to state, with third place finishers being alternates for nationals.
