Boynton Lions Club will bring the flavor of Vidalia onions to Catoosa this spring.  Their annual fundraising effort is underway. President Richmond Blackwell and its fundraising committee are working to increase the club’s ability to help others with the project.

“One of our club members travels to the Vidalia area to pick up the onions as soon as growers release them,” Mr. Blackwell said. “We are aiming at bringing our biggest load back to date.”

He said the club is taking orders in advance for five-pound bags for $5, 10-pound bags for $10 and 25-pound bags for $20.

Mr.
Blackwell said the club will host a pickup day at the Boynton United Methodist Church towards the end of April as the growers make them available.

Buyers may purchase the onions by sending a check or money order for the size bag they wish to order with their name, phone number and/or e-mail to Boynton Lions Club c/o BUMC, 4246 Boynton Dr., Ringgold, Ga. 30736

"Pre-orders will be notified by phone or e-mail where and when to pick up," officials said. " If onions are not picked up, the money sent will be considered a donation to the Lions club and onions will be sold after the pick up date."

Mr. Blackwell said growers pull the onions up fresh from the ground.

“As soon as we know for sure, we will put the word out on when we will have them available for pick up,” Mr. Blackwell said. “Selling onions assists the club in meeting the requests we have from the community for assistance with eyeglasses and other sight needs."

Members of the public may get more information about ordering onions from Boynton Lions Club at 423-991-1831.

The organization works on a statewide level with Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind and the Emory Child Care Center.

Another major community project is the long-term care and maintenance of the Dailey Hill Cemetery. The group is now receiving donations from friends and relatives of those interred there to assist with the costs of mowing and upkeep. Donations may be sent to Boynton Lions Club c/o BUMC, 4246 Boynton Dr., Ringgold, Ga. 30736
