Lee Women Complete Three-Game Sweep of Christian Brothers

  • Sunday, April 26, 2015
Lee scored a single run in the top of the 10th inning after holding off a Christian Brothers rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a three-game sweep of the Bucs on Sunday afternoon.

The Flames completed their Gulf South Conference (GSC) schedule with a 17-13-1 record. They will take a 29-17-1 mark into a non-conference game against visiting Tusculum College on Tuesday evening (6 p.m.) at Olympic Field. CBU wraps up its season at 9-26 overall and 4-21 in league play.

“We certainly didn't play our best today, but we survived and found a way to get it done,” commented coach Mark Brew after the sweep.
“We had opportunities to pull away from them, but couldn't get the big swing we needed. Cam Scott gave us a huge lift from the bottom of our line-up and Chris Adams continued to swing the hot stick.”

Adams finished the day with four hits, including a double. He scored twice and drove home another, accounting for three of Lee’s six runs. Scott countered with three hits. He also had a two-base knock, tallied a run and posted an RBI.

All totaled the Flames collected 15 hits against three Christian Brother pitchers. Lee broke open the scoreless game in the third inning when Scott walked and moved to second on a sac bunt by Siosi Poti. Adams ripped a two-base hit that scored Scott.

The Bucs tied the contest at one in the bottom of the same inning, but the Flames scored again in the fourth. MJ Brown stroked a double and made it a 2-1 game when Scott’s two-base knock pushed him across the dish. CBU bounced right back to make it a 2-2 affair.

Two runs went up on the board in the fifth.  Adams singled and was bunted to second by Andres Nelo. Trent Hill singled home Adams. Holland, who had earlier picked up a free pass, later scored on a wild pitch to put the Flames up 4-2. The margin reached 5-2 in the sixth. With one out, Adams continued to set the stage with a single. Nelo followed with a one-base hit and Big Ben Holland scored Adams with a ringing double.

Christian Brothers wasn’t done and tallied three times in the bottom of the eighth to deadlock the battle at five. After neither team scored in the ninth, the Flames put the contest to rest with a tally in the 10th.

Scott got the inning started with his third hit of the day. Zach Zyburt came on as a pinch runner. Poti moved Zyburt to second with a sac bunt. Adams drilled his fourth hit to push Zyburt to third. He scored what turned out to be the winning run on a RBI sac fly by Holland.

Myles Hollman had two hits and a pair of RBI for the Bucs. Charles Kelly, Casey Goodwin and Josh Johnson also had two hits apiece.

Lee pitcher Jacob Pott started and worked the first five innings. “Potts threw well up front, but we used him for five innings on Tuesday and felt we needed to protect his arm,” said Brew. “Chevis (Hoover) did a great job securing the final outs.”

Potts allowed six hits and two earned runs. He fanned four and walked two. Grayson Bailey followed. The lefty did not allow a run over two innings. Ridge Ackerman surrenders four hits and two earned runs in the eighth. Hoover (5-2) got the pitching win. In two innings the big right hander allowed a hit, walked two and struck out a pair. Peyton McArthur was charged with the defeat.

“Any sweep in this conference on the road is big,” concluded Brew.  “We have one final tune-up before the NCCAA regional and we need to keep this momentum heading into the post-season.”
