Atlanta – The Dalton State women’s tennis team came from behind Saturday to get by the hosts from the Savannah College of Art and Design – Atlanta, 5-4.
The Bees jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the doubles action, but the Roadrunners captured four of the six singles matches at the Bitsi Grant Tennis Center.
Dalton State’s Laura Winter and Chelsea Powell escaped SCAD-Atlanta’s Lee-Anne Lingo and Emma Bilyeu, 9-7.
The Bees Cori Cummings and Elisa Freitas clipped the Roadrunners Diana Narino and Daniela Sanchez, 9-7. Antonenella Altamirano and Tina Gancey (SCAD) then escaped Lucie Lovinfosse and Maria Alejandra Bejarano (DS), 8-6.
“I challenged the girls going into the singles to show what they are made of,” said Coach Michel Bates. “They all stepped up to the plate and fought very hard. I give credit to SCAD. They showed up to play today. I think they wanted a little revenge for the early season loss to us.”
In singles:
1. Lingo (SCAD) bested Powell (DS), 6-2, 6-2.
2. Winter (DS) defeated Altamirano (SCAD), 6-3, 6-2.
3. Cummings (SCAD) defeated Narino (DS), 6-1, 7-6.
