BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -The Chattanooga Lookouts won their fifth straight game by coming from behind in the late innings to defeat the Birmingham Barons 6-2 Monday at Regions Field. Two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth innings moved the Lookouts to 18-12, the best record in the Southern League.
Lookouts starter Alex Wimmers picked up the win to improve to 1-0 on the season. He struck out a season-high nine hitters.
Pitching 6.0 innings, Wimmers gave up two runs on six hits.
In the first inning, Byron Buxton crushed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left field to put the Lookouts up 1-0.
Birmingham tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
Marrero followed up his first plate appearance with an RBI double in the fifth to put the Barons on top 2-1. The hit to left was enough to plate Courtney Hawkins from first.
The Barons offense ran dry after that as Chattanooga's offense was just getting started. The Lookouts scored two in the seventh off and three more in the eighth. An RBI double from first baseman Max Kepler plated the first run, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Buxton scored the second.
Adam Walker continued his tear of the Barons in the eighth with a three-run homer - his fourth against Birmingham.
Marrero finished the night with three hits and two RBI, while Walker and Buxton accounted for five of the Lookouts six runs.
The two teams square off twice Tuesday with a doubleheader set for 6:30 p.m. ET
The first seven-inning game will see Mark Blackmar (0-2, 4.50 ERA) take on Chattanooga starter Tyler Duffey (2-2, 2.79 ERA), while the second game has two bullpen hurlers starting who have yet to be determined. The second game will be played 30 minutes following the end of the first game.
Byron Buxton led off the game with his fourth home run of the season.
