Former Cleveland Police Chief Involved In Incident With Officer's Wife Is Retiring

  • Wednesday, May 13, 2015

A former Cleveland, Tn., police chief who was involved in an incident with an officer's wife has submitted his resignation.

City Manager Janice Casteel, along with the Cleveland City Council, Director of Human Resources Jeff Davis, and Interim Chief Mark Gibson, said they received a letter of retirement by email from Dennis Maddux on Tuesday evening.

Officials said, "The email was confirmed this morning personally, by Dennis Maddux. While the city manager had approved the disciplinary action to be taken against him, the next step in the city's process would have been for the employee to be informed of the action, which by city policy is not effective for seven days.  Therefore, City Manager Janice Casteel is accepting his letter of retirement from the city of Cleveland effective immediately. This concludes the disciplinary process with Dennis Maddux."

Mr. Maddux had just gotten into the post when officer Jeff Griggs found his wife inside the Maddux vehicle just across the state line and an altercation ensued.
