Anderson Leads Boyd-Buchanan To Region 3-A Title

Buccaneers Beat Silverdale For Fifth Time In Five Innings, 10-0

Wednesday marked the fifth time that Silverdale and Boyd-Buchanan had met on the baseball field this spring.

And like the previous four, the home-standing Buccaneers won again, this time by a 10-0 final in the championship game of Region 3-A.

With the win, Boyd-Buchanan improves to 26-9 with its eighth-straight win.  The Bucs will be home one more time on Friday when they host the Region 4-A runner-up for the right to play at the state tournament in Murfreesboro next week.

Silverdale, which won a huge game at South Pittsburg earlier in the week, is now 12-14 and will travel to the 4-A winner on Friday.

Skyler Anderson was one of several heroes for the Bucs as he allowed just one hit in four innings.  He didn't walk anyone and he had one strikeout.

He was also impressive at the plate as he collected two hits in three at-bats, including a run-scoring single in the second and an RBI-double in the third.

"I thought that we played really well and hit the ball," the slender senior admitted afterward.

"I just tried to concentrate on my mechanics and wasn't even aware that I had allowed one hit.  It was also nice to contribute at the plate as that was my first RBI in forever.  But it's good to see us clicking on all cylinders.  We'll have to play well on Friday if we want to play in Murfreesboro next week," he added.

River Crowther ripped a two-out single to right in the first inning, but he was stranded when Blake Howard lined hard to center.

The only other two Silverdale base runners in Anderson's time came on errors.

Caleb Stafford reached on an infield boot in the second, but was picked off second by catcher Hunter Payne.  Josiah Green reached on another infield bobble in the fourth, but Anderson then retired the next three in a row without further damage.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneer bats came to life in the second.

Sending 10 hitters to the plate, the hosts score five runs.  Payne had an RBI-double while Anderson drove in another with a single.  Cade Evans had an RBI on a fielder's choice while Colby Morgan had an RBI when he got hit with the bases loaded,

Anderson's two-out double in the third allowed courtesy runner Seth Caudle to score for a 6-0 lead while Austin Jackson's double in the fourth plated Josh Antwine and Morgan for an 8-0 advantage.

Then in the fifth with one out, Antwine and Morgan both walked and both scored when E.J. Matthews ripped a double into the corner in right.  He would have been credited with a triple as he made it to third without a problem, but the game had ended when Morgan scored.

"Even though we've beaten them five times this year, we don't take them lightly," said Boyd-Buchanan coach Josh Rider following the game.

"They won a big game at South Pittsburg on Monday and that's no easy task, but I felt like we were focused today.  We were able to break through with some runs in the second that gave us some breathing room and allowed us to relax just a little bit.

"And I thought that Skyler Anderson was on his game today as he pitched great.  Our goal was to win today so we could play at home again on Friday, but we'll have to take care of business to get to Murfreesboro," Rider added.

Silverdale coach Jonathan Adcock tried every trick he knew to create different results, but nothing seemed to work.

"I don't know quite what to say," he began after his post-game talk with his players.

"We made a couple of mistakes and they were able to capitalize.  Then the flood gates opened.  It's hard to come back from that.  But we can't afford to get down on ourselves.  That win at South Pittsburg was huge, but we didn't look so good today.

"Boyd-Buchanan has strong pitching and outstanding hitting as they have a quality team.  We'd love to see them for the sixth time next week," he concluded.

First baseman Brandon Wilingham was one of three Buccaneer players with two hits, joining Morgan and Anderson.  Antwine, Matthews, Jackson and Payne all had one apiece.

Noah Rogers had a single in the fifth for Silverdale's only other hit.

While Anderson was the winning pitcher, Green took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits in three and a third innings.  He also walked one and hit three while striking out two.
