Disciplinary actions were administered to Cleveland Police Lieutenant Steve Tyson and Officer Jeff Griggs on Wednesday for their part in incidents involving the wife of Griggs and former Cleveland Police Chief Dennis Maddux, Cleveland Police spokesperson Evie West said.
Maddux submitted his retirement on Tuesday.
Ms. Casteel said, "Due to the findings of the Internal Affairs investigation that was conducted by the District Attorney’s Office, it was concluded that Officer Griggs was found to violate Policy 04-A/LL Subsection 4-HH “Truthfulness”, Policy 08-H “Internal Affairs” Subsection C #1 and #5, which is also a violation of Policy 05-A/LL “Prohibited Behaviors” Subsection 05-AA “Disobeying Orders” and #5 "Compliance with Direct Orders of Superior or Internal Investigation Officer.”
"Griggs was demoted from a Crime Scene Technician and reassigned to the Patrol Division as a Level 25 patrol officer. Lieutenant Steve Tyson violated Policy 04-A/LL “Failure to Report Violations” . Lieutenant Tyson received a written reprimand and will be reassigned from the Criminal Investigations Division to the Patrol Division as a patrol Lieutenant."
There were incidents when Griggs found his wife in a patrol car with Maddux and then when Griggs and Tyson went to the Griggs home and Ms. Griggs drove up.
In early March, Griggs found his wife and Maddux together in Maddux's patrol car just across the county line. He began taking pictures of the couple and Ms. Griggs snatched the camera.
Griggs was taken into custody a few days later for a violation of an order of protection issued after the McMinn County incident.
The incidents happened just shortly after Maddux became chief.
