Lee University mathematics students Benjamin Brett Buckner, Sarah Minucci and Mesa Pracht have each been accepted into Research Experience for Undergraduate programs for the summer.
“Research is an incredible feeling,” said Mr. Buckner. “Developing some new mathematical idea that no one else knows yet and sharing that knowledge is what being a scholar is all about. Participating in this REU provides an opportunity to contribute original information to the great tradition of mathematics.”
Mr. Buckner will spend eight weeks at California State University, Channel Islands in Camarillo, California. Ms. Minucci will be studying at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wi., for 10 weeks with the “Computation Across the Disciplines” research program. As a part of the Pacific Undergraduate Research Experience in Mathematics, Pracht will spend eight weeks studying at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
“I think it is amazing that we have three students who received REUs for this summer,” said Dr. Debra Mimbs, assistant professor of mathematics at Lee. “These programs are extremely competitive, and I am so proud of their hard work and determination.”
The REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. The program is highly competitive, with only 10 percent or less of applicants chosen to receive funding for summer research programs.
