Tommie Sue Thurman, clerical assistant at Daisy Elementary School and Realtor Brenda B. Purcell
Brenda B. Purcell, a broker with REMAX Renaissance Realtors enjoys giving back to the community in her spare time.
Ms. Purcell said, "For over 25 years of my life, I worked corporately and tried to support organizations financially thru United Way giving and the Combined Federal Campaign. Now that I have some personal time to give back, I get to see firsthand some of the real needs.
"Since moving to Falling Water, I have focused on church work by delivering weekly snack packs prepared by the youth at Burks United Methodist Church.
These weekly snacks go home with 72 kids each week at Daisy Elementary School. The church buys the healthy snacks from the Chattanooga Food Bank, the youth members package them up on Sunday evenings, and several volunteers’ alternate months delivering the food. The teachers place the bags in the students’ backpacks and they are sent home for the weekend. These snacks help fill the tummies of many kids over the weekend whose families may be stretched and not able to provide enough nourishment or in households where the parents have to work two jobs and cannot be home for meal preparation. The items are mostly self serve and the kids can easily open them up."
This community partnership between Burks UMC and Daisy Elementary School in Soddy Daisy has been going on for at least two years.
