SUV Crashes Into Wall In St. Elmo; Driver Runs Off, Leaving Injured Child Inside

  • Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Police said after an SUV crashed into a stone wall in St. Elmo on Wednesday morning, the driver ran off, leaving an injured child in the vehicle.

The incident happened around 8:40 a.m. at the corner of Tennessee Avenue and 53rd Street.

Neighbors said a black male ran from the scene, and that they saw police chasing the vehicle with sirens on prior to the crash.

The sheriff's office and highway patrol were involved in the chase.

The pursuit of the Dodge Durango began on Wauhatchie Pike when an attempt was made to stop the vehicle for speeding. The driver would not stop and continued to St. Elmo. The vehicle received damage to the front right tire when it struck a sign at Broad Street. Both air bags deployed in the crash.

The vehicle almost struck a St. Elmo resident who was pulling onto Tennessee Avenue.

The four-year-old girl told neighbors that it was her mother's vehicle.

Police said the young girl was taken to the hospital with injuries, but they appeared to be minor.

There were skid marks in the pavement for about 30 feet prior to the wall.

The vehicle was southbound on Tennessee Avenue.
