Richard Burney
Richard M. Burney, 84, died peacefully at home with his family by his side, on Monday, May 18, 2015.
He was born in Nashville, to the late Joseph L. and Maybelle Hickey Burney.
He retired from Yellow Freight as a truck driver and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. Richard could brighten a room full of people with his grin and unique wave of hello. He enriched the lives of all that knew him, especially his family. He taught by example how to love and enjoy life. He loved the Lord and had very strong Christian values. You always knew exactly how he felt, but “there was always love in Daddy’s hands.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marguerite Gazaway Burney, son, Michael V. Burney, two sisters, Alice Kay and Teena Johnson and brothers, Carl, Joe, Daniel, David, Jimmy and Johnny.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Karen Burney, daughter, Carol Harvey, daughter and son-in-law, Cecilia and Michael Dinkins, nine grandchildren, Tesha Burney Alexander, M. Wayne Dinkins II, Allen Burney, Dana Harvey Brubeck, Lori Dinkins Millwood, Richard Dinkins, Jena Harvey Ellison, Ryan Burney and Kyle Burney, 18 great-grandchildren, fiancée, Jean Cole, siblings, Patsy Thacker, Ronald Burney and Loretta Gordon and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with Jerry Wiedenbenner and Michael Dinkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Allen, Ryan, Kyle Burney, Richard and Wayne Dinkins and Nick Millwood acting as pallbearers. Military honors will be observed.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 25, from 3-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory at the end of Historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.
