Chase Jones - Dalton State Golf
Daytona Beach, Fla. – After three days and 54 holes, Dalton State has moved up to 12th in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men’s Golf Tournament.
It was a hot and humid day at the Par-72, 6,947 yards Wood Course at LPGA International. Eighty golfers, including all of the Roadrunners, had to finish the weather delayed second round before beginning the third 18 holes of play.
Dalton State’s Sean Elliott remains on top of the individual leaderboard after posting a seven under par 65 in Thursday afternoon’s round with two bogies and nine birdies.
The sophomore has shot below par each round. He started with a 68, then tallied a 69. His 202 is a remarkable 14 under par.
After starting off with a 75 on Monday, Levi Nix has now posted two straight 72’s to be +3 for the tournament at 219. Chase Jones (79-74-77 = 230) had one birdie and six bogies. Max Bruck (76-84-78 = 237) scored a birdie but also had five bogies and started the round with a double bogie.
After leaving the first two rounds because of back pains, Anthony D’Angelo completed Thursday’s round with a 78. D’Angelo had one birdie, three bogies, and a couple of double bogies.
“It was a long day and I am very proud of the way all the guys handled it, said Coach Ben Rickett. “We have one more round left in the season and it’s time to enjoy golf one last time in this school year. I couldn’t be more proud of this group of guys.”
Dalton State is playing in its first season of eligibility for postseason play. They are the 2015 Southern States Athletic Conference Champion.
Defending NAIA Champion College of Coastal Georgia (282-289-283 = 854) is on top of the team leaderboard going into the final day of the tournament. Alastair Tidcombe (65-73-70 = 208) leads the Mariners
Williams Woods (Mo.) (282-295-293 = 870) is in second, 16 strokes behind Coastal Georgia. Cal State San Marcus is at 871 and Johnson & Wales (Fla.) is 872.
No. 5 Webber International (Fla.) 874, No.6 Wayland Baptist 875, No. 7 Texas Wesleyan 877, No. 8 South Carolina Beaufort 878, No. 9 Oklahoma City 879, No.10 British Columbia 880, and No. 11 Grand View University 882 are next.
Dalton State moved ahead of now No. 13 Tennessee Wesleyan. The Bulldogs are now 891. Lindsey Wilson (KY.) 892 is 14th, The Master’s College is 15th. Bethany College (Ks.) (897) and Cardinal Stretch University (899) were the final two teams to make the cut.
Now out of the tournament are Marian University (Ind.) (905, Lewis-Clark St. (Id.) 911), Victoria (BC) 913, Bellevue University (Ne.) 913, Davenportl 913, Northwestern College (Ia.) 918, Embry-Riddle (Fla.) 918, Point Park (920), Culver-Stockton (933) Concordia University (Or.) 937, St. Francis (Il.) (964) and the University of Jamestown (971).
Zach Day of the University of Mobile (74-72-73 = 214) will continue to represent the SSAC as an individual.
The NAIA announced Thursday that Levi Nix has been named a Daktronics 2015 Scholar Athlete.
