The property tax rate is remaining the same in Soddy Daisy at $1.3524 per $100 of assessed valuation.

A public hearing and first reading of the fiscal year 2015-2016 budget took place Thursday night at the meeting of the Soddy Daisy Commission. There were no comments from citizens before it was unanimously approved by the commissioners.

Thomas Edward Tucker has operated a business on property located at 107 Johnson Road for the past 20 years.

He recently applied for a new business license and discovered the zoning was wrong. He came to the commission meeting to request a zoning change from A-1 Agricultural District to C-3 General Business District to correct the problem. The change was recommended by the planning commission and approved by the board of commissioners.

City Manager Janice Cagle asked for and received authorization to pay for paving that is nearing completion. For asphalt, rock and drainage tiles, the cost to pave around one and a half miles on Rock Quarry Road was a little over $34,000.

Pioneer Day, an event to honor Soddy Daisy’s heritage from the early 1800’s will take place Saturday. Starting at 8 a.m. and lasting until the crowd decides to leave, there will be live music, games, demonstrations from Horsin’ Around Carving School and other crafters, handmade goods and local produce. On Saturday, the farmer’s market will be in conjunction with Pioneer Day, but the farmer’s market will be open every Saturday from May through November. The festivities will all take place at the park around Poe’s Tavern.

Commissioner Gene Shipley told the audience that a move for the caboose in North-End Park is planned in order to open up the space for people to use and to provide options for the playground. The city manager is looking for tracks to lie down in order to reposition it. The goal is to have it in a new location within the park by the Fourth of July.

Commissioner Robert Cothran said that an armored personnel carrier has now been placed in Veterans Park, but work to finish the project is continuing.

Vice Mayor Patti Skates recognized the police and fire departments for placing the flags and crosses honoring veterans from Soddy Daisy on the lawn in front of city hall.
