City Council Raising Budget Amount For "Food And Ice"

  • Tuesday, May 26, 2015

The City Council is raising the amount in its budget for "food and ice."

The increase is from $1,000 to $11,000.

At one time, food was brought in for council members prior to the 6 p.m. sessions.

Later, the policy was curbed after one council member began walking down the street to buy a sandwich for himself.

The budget for outside travel is being cut from $7,900 to $5,400.

Officials noted that a trip by two council members to (Sister City) Wuxi, China, inflated that budget last year, and there was also the expense for going to the National League of Cities.

Councilman Mitchell said, "I don't know of any Wuxi trips this year."

It was decided that council members will get $3,000 each to spend in their districts - for a total of $27,000.

The final council budget is up 1.3 percent. Councilman Mitchell said some funds were taken from the capital line item so that the budget will be "flat" except for raises and benefits for staff members.
