Crye Says Lower Speed Limit Needed For Trucks Near Where 17-Year-Old Girl Was Killed

Bradley County Commissioner Thomas Crye said a lower speed limit is needed for trucks on the highway where a 17-year-old girl was killed last Wednesday in Cleveland.

Authorities said Ashlyn Lamberth was killed when she turned left on North Lee Highway (Highway 11) and a logging truck struck her driver's door.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the truck driver did not stop at a traffic light at Tasso Lane.

Charges are pending in the fatal crash.

Commissioner Crye said additional safety measures are needed, but he said lowering the speed limit for trucks would help.

Also at the Bradley County Commission meeting, Vice Chairman Jeff Yarber said he responded to complaints about the condition of a cemetery that he said is partly owned by the county and partly by Joe V. Williams. He said officials earlier "went to bat" against Mr. Williams.

But he said when he arrived this time he found knee-high grass as well as trash on the county side. "It is very unkempt," he said.

Vice Chairman Yarber said there is a sign that says maintenance is by the Bradley County Highway Department. But he said he had not yet been able to get help from Road Supt. Sandra Knight. Commissioner Charlotte Peak-Jones said she would call a meeting of the road committee for next Monday night to look into the situation.

County Mayor D. Gary Davis said the agreement for the county to maintain the site apparently "goes way back."

Commission members said if the county is not going to keep up the lot, "then the sign ought to be taken down."

Chairman Louie Alford noted that some are blaming the county for the overgrown condition of the Waterville Golf Course. The city of Cleveland opted earlier this year to lease the 18-hole course to a private firm.

Commissioner Dan Rawls said the grass is so high that "you can no longer see the greens."

It was noted that the deal fell through and Cleveland has canceled the contract.

But it's too late for golf this year, commissioners noted, saying the course is now better fit "for hay."
