Through an outpouring of support from the media and the public, the Chattanooga National Cemetery was able to pick up and secure all of the U.S. flags that were placed on the gravesites for Memorial Day. The community effort allowed officials to secure all flags within two days, which is usually a seven-day project.
The cemetery received volunteers of all ages throughout the two days starting on Tuesday morning.
Bill Sachse, program support assistant for the cemetery said, "I am indescribably proud of the people of Chattanooga and the surrounding communities that support the veterans and their families as well as the staff at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The value and importance of their efforts are evident from the day the first flag was placed on May 23, at 9 a.m. until the last flag was picked up today at noon. On behalf of the Chattanooga National Cemetery, the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, and the Cherokee Scout Council, thank you for your support of our nation's heroes."
