Going by Cameron Harbor
By the river
Toward Lookout Mountain
Users of the new Tennessee Riverwalk section between Ross's Landing Park and St. Elmo can use a mobile device app to get information and history about the trail.
Dan Saieed, of the county development department, said a $49,425 grant was secured to cover the cost of the app.
It will be developed by the Neo Tech firm and ready when the new section of trail by the Tennessee Riverwalk is set to open next spring.
Mr. Saieed said this part of the heavily-landscaped, paved walkway goes through the old Tannery Flats industrial area. He said the narrative will give the interesting history of the former bustling manufacturing site.
He said, if this app proves popular, then others may be developed to cover older sections of the popular Riverwalk upriver.
Todd Leamon, county public works administrator, said some sections of the new trail have already been paved, while others are not so far along.
He said an old bridge on the Wheland property will be used to cross Chattanooga Creek.
The trail goes by the new Cameron Harbor development, then behind Alstom (formerly Combustion Engineering).
The site is mainly industrial fill so there were no wetland sections requiring raised boardwalks.
Mr. Leamon said an old industrial building is being renovated to serve as a trailhead with restroom facilities at Middle Street, where the current project ends.
The last section of the walkway, leading on near the Mount Vernon Restaurant and on to the Incline Railway, is being handled by the city of Chattanooga.
