UTC Softball Suffers 1st Home Loss; Trying To Seal SoCon Title Sunday

  • Sunday, May 3, 2015
The Chattanooga softball team (31-12, 11-4) fell to the Samford Bulldogs, 4-3 in its first home loss of the season on Saturday night.

With Mercer falling to ETSU in a doubleheader in Johnson City, the SoCon regular season title will either go to Chattanooga or Samford. The Mocs must win one of two games on Sunday, while the Bulldogs must sweep the doubleheader to claim the title.

Sunday’s doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Chattanooga 3, Samford 4

Samford wasted no time in taking the lead as a double from Bulldog Cal Brister to left field brought around runners from third and second for a 2-0 lead.

Samford pitcher, Millie Hanson (18-9) maintained the Bulldogs’ advantage for the next five innings, striking out eight Mocs while only giving up a one walk.

The SoCon opponent tacked on single runs in the third and seventh innings before a three-run homer from Anyssa Robles, in the bottom of the seventh frame, gave the Mocs one last look to stay in the game. However, Chattanooga would not be able to extend the offensive spark as Samford collected the remaining outs before the Mocs put up any more runs.
