Lee Signs Three Hoopsters

  • Friday, May 8, 2015
Lee men’s basketball coach Tommy Brown and his staff released the names for three incoming players for the 2015-16 hoop season. Joining the Flames will be transfers Rico Overall, CJ Reese and freshman Cam Boyd.

Coach Brown sees all three signees as stepping in next season and helping the Flames as they enter their first season of officially battling for high finishes in the rugged Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II.

Rico Overall attended Walton High School (Marietta, Ga.) before attending Cleveland State Community and playing for coach Lee Cigliano and assistant Joe Goydish.
A combo guard throughout his career, Overall said he was “looking to help the team anyway he can.”

Shooting credentials is what Overall brings to the Lee program. For the Cougars last season he ranked 21st in TJCAA scoring with a 20.5 ppg average. He also knocked down 44 percent of his shots from 3-point range. He earned a spot on the TJCAA All-Conference team.

Said Overall: “The reasons I chose Lee are endless. I enjoyed the great atmosphere and the amazing people on campus. The coaching staff and players made me feel like family. On my visit I was more than comfortable with all the students and staff.”

Said Coach Brown: "Rico is coming from just across town after a stellar sophomore year at Cleveland State. He put up some really good numbers in a very tough Tennessee Junior College league this year. He can score in a variety of ways and play multiple positions for us. Rico should be able to step in and contribute right away."

CJ Reese began his high school career at Westlake (Atlanta). He started as a freshman at Westlake and did the same at McCallie School where he played for coach Dan Wadley. The McCallie club had back-to-back appearances in the state tournament and during his senior season the Tornado won 24 straight games before losing. Reese was first-team all-state, named his team’s MVP and earned a McDonalds All-American nomination. During the off-season Reese was a member of the AAU Atlanta Celtics. They were ranked No. 1 in the nation and captured a national championship in the Adidas Super 64, one of the biggest AAU tournament held in Las Vegas.

Ranked highly by ESPN and considered the No. 6 point guard prospect in Tennessee, Reese signed with Southeast Missouri out of high school and was forced to redshirt his freshman season because of a history credit he needed. Not happy with his playing time during his first year of eligibility at Southeast, Reese began “looking for a better situation.

“Lee University called me and I felt it was perfect fit because it was closer to home and I was familiar with the school because I went to high school in Chattanooga.” he noted. “The coaches really stayed loyal to me during the entire period and the staff answered any questions I posed. I feel blessed to have an excellent school like Lee to further my education.”

Reese said his first goal this coming year was to take care of his academics. “I want to go undefeated, win a championship and become a family with Lee. I also want to set accomplishments for myself along the way, but always with the help of my teammates.”

Coach Brown about Reese: "CJ is a big guard that sees the floor. He gets people involved and can really defend. He had a very good career at McCallie and we're thrilled that he's decided to come back to this area of Tennessee. We think he will be able to come in and make an immediate impact for us."

Cam Boyd played for a Greater Atlanta Christian team that is known as a national high school power. During his four years at GAC, his club won 107 games and lost just 19 times. This past season they were 20-10. During his four-year career he scored 1007 points and knocked down a school record 251 3-pointers. A shooting guard, Boyd played for coaches Eddie Martin, Brent Martin and Joe Marrelle.

“My team goals would be to get better every single game, win the conference and bring back a national championship to Cleveland, Tenn.” said Boyd. “My personal goal would be to work hard both on and off the court, be a leader to my teammates and graduate in two years. My major will be business management.”

Said coach Brown: “Cam comes from an incredibly successful high school program where he had an outstanding career. He's a great competitor and a guy that can really fill it up from the outside. We're excited to add that kind of shooting threat to our roster."
