BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite a sellout crowd of 8,500 packed Regions Field to see the Barons (30-32) take on the Lookouts (37-24) Saturday evening,.the Barons managied just three singles against the Lookouts in a 4-0 loss.. It was the second consecutive night Birmingham was shutout by Chattanooga.
There was a pretty exciting transaction on Saturday that you’ve likely already heard about but Chattanooga continued its winning ways even without the man at the top of their lineup. They got big production from their stars, and Niko Goodrum made his AA debut. Goodrum as DH went 2-for-4 in his first Lookouts' game.
Niko Goodrum was called up to take the roster spot of Bryan Buxton.
Inning by inning game Recap
Lookouts hurler Alex Wimmers (4-1, 4.84 ERA) pitched into the eighth, allowing just two hits to Christian Marrero before giving way to reliever Jake Reed. In the only inning that the Barons entertained multiple base runners,
Birmingham starter Mark Blackmar (0-4, 3.71 ERA) pitched well for the Barons, allowing just five hits and two runs over six innings.
A Miguel Sano sacrifice fly in the third and a two-out RBI single by Mike Gonzales gave the Lookouts a 2-0 advantage.
Sano, who may be headed to Minneapolis later this summer, went 1-for-2, one RBI.
Adam Walker hit his league-leading 17th home run, a two-run shot, in the eighth off of Zach Isler to close out the scoring.
Originally in the Lookouts lineup batting leadoff and playing center, Byron Buxton was scratched and replaced with Jorge Polanco. Hours later, it was announced Buxton had been promoted to Minnesota.
Game four of the five-game series is a Sunday matinee. Fans will see a slightly different type of heavyweight matchup as White Sox No. 2 prospect Frankie Montas (1-1, 2.50 ERA) squares off against Minnesota Twins No. 4 prospect Jose Berrios (7-3, 3.21 ERA) square off in the 4 p.m. contest.
Montas is coming off a seven-inning no-hitter thrown June 9 at Tennessee, and Berrios is touted as the No. 28 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball.
Adam Brett Walker ll hit his league-leading 17th homer.
