New Traffic Camera Law Could Curb City Use Of Speed-Control Devices

  • Tuesday, June 2, 2015

A new law banning the use of speed cameras in Tennessee is set to curb city of Chattanooga use of the devices.

However, Chief Operating Officer Brent Goldberg said the city budget still contains "a slight increase" in expected revenue from the cameras.

He said the city will be taking down unmanned cameras like the one on Germantown Road. City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem said he has received a number of complaints about it.

Mr. Goldberg said it is not clear whether the city will have to stop using vans installed with speed cameras in which a police officer is inside, but is not actually manning the camera.

He said the cameras on the S Curves would remain.

The law did not rule out traffic cameras at red lights.
