Oscar-Nominated Screenwriter Lucy Alibar Returns To Sewanee July 8

  • Tuesday, June 23, 2015

Lucy Alibar is best known as the Oscar-nominated co-screenwriter of the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. She attended the Sewanee Young Writers’ Conference in the summer of 1999. Alibar will return to the University of the South in July, as a guest of the Young Writers’ Conference and the School of Letters, for a screening of the film and a public talk.

Beasts of the Southern Wild will be shown at 8 p.m.

Monday, July 6, in the Sewanee Union Theatre. The showing is free and open to the public. The screenplay, based on Alibar’s original stage play Juicy and Delicious, won BAFTA and Scripter awards, while the film itself won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and the Cannes Film Festival Camera D’Or.

Ms. Alibar will give a reading at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, in Gailor Auditorium on the Sewanee campus. The public is welcome, and a reception will follow.

“I had a wonderful experience at SYWC as a teenager,” said Alibar. “I'm thrilled to be able to give back to a program that gave me so much.” She is a special guest at this year’s Young Writers’ Conference and will engage students in a staged reading of one of her plays.

Ms. Alibar’s other works for the stage include “Christmas and Jubilee Behold the Meteor Shower,” “Mommy Says I’m Pretty on the Insides,” “Easybake,” and “Friend of Dorothy,” along with a forthcoming adaptation of The Secret Garden. Her first novel, Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up—also based on a stage play and headed for the movies—is scheduled for publication this year.
