Police said they have made an arrest in the case of the cough syrup thief at the Kmart on Highway 153.

Store officials said a white male had been to the store at least 10 times recently to open bottles of cough syrup and drink it. They said he had consumed almost $400 worth of cough syrup.

In the most recent incident, they said they caught the man on video gulping down two bottles of cough syrup, then trying to hide the bottles.

A police officer viewed the video and said he could identify the man as someone he had arrested previously - Christopher Wade Strickland. He said the 26-year-old Strickland had a number of prior shoplifting charges and had just gotten out of jail.

The officer soon located Strickland at a nearby Burger King and found he was wearing the same black clothing as in the Kmart video.

Strickland was taken to jail on a charge of theft under $500.
