The defending champion Dalton Dolphins have met or exceeded every team goal for the Chattanooga Area Swim League this summer, so it’s not really a surprise that they’re leading the 2015 Bill Caulkins City Meet after the first day had concluded at the Arlene Crye Pool in Fort Oglethorpe’s Gilbert-Stephenson Park early Friday evening

The Dolphins are leading with 1,199 points while Signal Mountain is relatively close with 1,046.  Stuart Heights is third with 1,004 while Ooltewah and Fairyland complete the top five teams with 607 and 544.5 points, respectively.

As was expected for the middle of July, temperatures were sweltering along the pool deck, but the action was even hotter as there was some really exciting races, particularly in the last session of championship races.

There was only one record broken on Friday and it belonged to the Cleveland AquaTigers as the quartet of Ashlin Harper, Anna Thompson, Breanna Belcher and Alexia Jackson broke the record for the girls 11-12 medley relay.

The record-breaking time was 2:03.10, which beat Stuart Heights 15-year-old mark of 2:04.32 by more than a second.

While that was the only record, there were a bunch of impressive individual performances, including five youngsters who won three events.

Dalton had two in Roman Valdez and Henry Bethel while Stuart Heights also had two in Luke Waldrep and Ellie Waldrep.  Susanna LaRochelle was a dominant force for Signal Mountain as well.

Dalton coach Jason Mezaros was visibly tired at the end of the day.  He’s the Meet Director and had been at the pool since 5 a.m., so he was almost exhausted – yet a very happy fellow – when the last race had concluded.

“It’s been a good day for Dalton swimming,” he began his comments while the swimmers, parents and fans headed for the parking lot.

“I’m really happy with how our girls performed as we had more in the finals than normal, but I’m just pleased all the way around.  I like where we are right now.  We had a goal for points we wanted to score today and we exceeded that.

And we’re normally stronger on the second day, so we’ll just wait and see what happens,” he nodded.

Signal Mountain coach Stephanie Cohen was also happy with the way her Green Giants performed in the league’s biggest meet.

“There were lots of good swims today and my 13-14 girls were beyond impressive.  All of our kids swam hard as we put it all out there today.  We made a few mistakes with some of the younger kids, but it was a good learning experience.

“It’s been a long day, but it’s been pretty good from my point of view.  Nobody slacked off,” she added.

Stuart Heights coach Katie Sallee was really caught by surprise at how well her kids performed, especially the youngest ones.

“Our little kids did an amazing job as all held their spots or moved up in the finals,” she began.

“It was very exciting as they certainly exceeded my expectations.  I loved watching it and I’m really excited about tomorrow as well,” she nodded.

Preliminary heats start early Saturday morning while the ever-exciting finals will begin around 5:30.  That’s also when the annual Jennifer Fugate Awards will be announced.
