The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden by Kevin DeYoung and Don Clark. It is available from Crossway in August.
I’ve read a lot of children’s books about the Bible, but this one has been my favorite. My entire family enjoyed this book, and I will be reading it to them (and by myself!) often.
As DeYoung moves through the story of redemption, the colors and styles of the illustrations change to reflect the mood. This engaged my toddler in ways that words alone can't.
The story is well told. DeYoung uses evocative, yet simple, language and remains faithful to the narrative of the Bible. The stories he gives attention to and the pace of the narrative make this book a fresh look at Scripture.
Crossway recommends that The Biggest Story be read aloud to kids five to eight years old and suggests that kids eight to 12 can read it by themselves without difficulty. I read the book to my three- year old and he loved it! He followed right along and asked to read it night after night. So, if you don't have kids in the recommended age range (or if you don't have kids at all), buy this book and read it anyway.
A point of interest to Reformed Christians is that there are no pictures of Jesus in this book (in keeping with the creeds and confessions of faith written during the Protestant Reformation).
