Lieutenant General Mark A. Brilakis, Commanding General, Marine Corps Recruiting Command, met with the members of RSS Chattanooga after the shooting on Lee Highway that wounded Sergeant Demonte Cheeley, a canvassing recruiter.
General Brilakis met with the Marines and their families "to thank them for their service and their quick reaction to the unprovoked attack."
Also present were 6th MCD commanding officer Col Jeff Smitherman and his SgtMaj, Anthony Page; Major Kathryn Wagner, commanding officer RS Nashville and her Recruiter Instructor, MGySgt Robert Deskins; and the MCRC SgtMaj, Sam Heyward.
A gunman fired a hail of bullets into the glass front door of the office in a strip center on Lee Highway near Highway 153. He then drove to Amnicola Highway, where he shot and killed five military personnel at the Naval and Marines Support Center.
