John Smoltz, one of Atlanta's most popular baseball players, joined former Braves manager Bobby Cox and pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, as members of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday at Cooperstown, NY. Smoltz entered Sunday, along with second baseman Craig Biggio, pitchers Pedro Martinez, and Randy Johnson.
A personal note: It was my privilege to get to know John Smoltz and he was the the first player I interviewed when I began covering the Braves at Turner Field for chattanoogan.com. It was also my privilege to meet and photograph each of the other players inducted into the Hall of Fame Sunday.
Another thing, while the pitcher was warming up, it was my practice to go behind home plate in front of the backstop where I would take photos of the starting pitcher. If I got directly behind the visiting catcher when Randy Johnson was pitching, he would waive me to move to the side.
