Eddie Cothran, 46, was arrested on Monday for aggravated assault after police said he threatened his mother and then cut her with a hatchet.

Responding officers found the mother on Claire Circle who stated that she had gotten into a heated argument with the defendant.

She said that he had been drinking and wanted to use her car. When she said he could not, he became angry and told her that if she did not buy him a truck, he would burn her house down. She then gave him $300, but he continued to yell and cuss at her.

The victim said that she then slapped the defendant in the face to get him away from her, but when she attempted to call 911, he grabbed the phone out of her hand and smashed it on the ground.

Then when she tried to leave in her car, he reached through the window and forced the vehicle into park, leaving the keys stuck in the ignition. At this point he had a hatchet in his hand and left a cut on her left wrist.

At this point, the victim left the scene and went to a convenience store on Dallas Hollow Road where she contacted police.

The responding officers were unable to find the defendant at the scene, instead finding him sitting on a bench on Smith Morgan Road. As officers approached, he ran into some nearby woods where he was detained after a short foot chase.

He was found to have $295 on his person.
