Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday Set For Aug. 7-9

  • Thursday, July 30, 2015

State Representative Kevin Brooks (R–Cleveland) and State Representative Dan Howell (R–Georgetown) announced that Tennessee’s 11th annual Sales Tax Holiday is scheduled for Aug. 7-9. During the three-day tax holiday, shoppers can save on items such as tax-free clothing, school and art supplies, and computer purchases.

"It is once again that time of year for those in our community to participate in our state’s annual sales tax holiday,” said Rep. Brooks. “This tax-free weekend presents a great opportunity to save money on back-to-school items or to stock up on much-needed essentials.

It also gives us the chance to shop local and support our small businesses right here at home.”

The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. During the designated three day weekend, shoppers will not pay state or local sales tax on select clothing with a price of $100 or less per item, school and art supplies with a price of $100 or less per item, and computers with a price of $1,500 or less.

“As many of us know, back-to-school expenses can really put a strain on family budgets,” Rep. Howell continued. “I hope you will all join in on this opportunity to shop local and save money as we prepare for the start of school year.”

Over the last several years, the House of Representatives has voted to reduce state tax rates by several hundred million dollars, including cuts to the tax on groceries, reductions to the Hall Tax that disproportionally affects seniors living on a fixed income, repealing the state gift tax and death tax, and by extending property tax relief to the elderly, the disabled, and Tennessee veterans.

“Both Kevin and Dan are my partners in the General Assembly in advocating for lower taxes for all Tennesseans,” said House Speaker Beth Harwell (R–Nashville). “As a group, we all support this tax holiday and give our word to always fight to put even more of your hard earned money back in your pocket where it belongs, especially as you prepare to send your kids back to school.”
