A SWAT Team was called to a house in East Ridge early Saturday morning after police said a man chased his sister and her boyfriend out of the residence with a machete. Then he barricaded himself inside.
East Ridge Police responded to a report of domestic assault in the 3700 block of Whitehead Avenue. Police arrived on the scene at about 2:30 a.m. and immediately made contact with a male and female victim outside of their residence.
The woman said her brother, Tommy Durham, had assaulted both her and her boyfriend before chasing them out of their residence with a machete.
Durham, 36, had retreated back inside the residence prior to police arrival and would not respond when police attempted to make contact with him at the door.
Police did observe through a window that Durham was still armed with the machete. The East Ridge SWAT Team was activated and arrived at about 3:15 a.m.
A member of the East Ridge Police Department Patrol Division was able to eventually make telephone contact with Durham and convince him to surrender peacefully to police. At 4:57 a.m. Durham exited the residence unarmed and was taken into custody without incident.
The two victims were transported by ambulance to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Durham was charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated domestic assault. He is scheduled to appear in East Ridge Court on July 21.
