The Women’s Golf Coaches Association of America has announced that four Dalton State golfers are among the 758 women across all levels of women’s golf to be named All-American Scholars.
“Criteria for the selection to the All-American Scholars team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics,” according to the release. A minimum Grade Point Average of 3.50 is required.
Rising sophomores Ashley McDonald, Caroline Griffin, Rachel Rebne and Taylor Marie Griner are the first Dalton State athletes to be honored by the WGCA.
Last year marked the first year of competition for Roadrunner women’s golf.
Roadrunner Coach Jim McGrew says he is honored to have such exceptional student athletes.
“It is a great honor to have one player named as an Academic All-American, but to have four in our first year is really special,” said McGrew. “It is a great testament to the girls to spend the time they do on golf and yet manage to make great grades as well. They are the true definition of a student athlete. We could not be prouder of them.”
All of the honorees are Georgia natives. McDonald is from Chickamauga; Griffin, who was also the Southern States Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year for 2014-2015, is from Sycamore; Rebne is from Fort Oglethorpe and Griner is from Moultrie.
Griffin earned both NAIA All-American and WGCA Academic All-American honors. In their first season of eligibility, Dalton State women and men captured the SSAC Golf Championships. The women finish tied for second in the NAIA National Tournament. Griffin had the sixth best individual score in NAIA Championship event.
