Annual Crank Classic Basketball Game Is Saturday

  • Sunday, August 2, 2015

The 11th Annual Crank Classic basketball game is set for Saturday at the Washington Hills Recreation Center.  Activities start at 4 p.m. and tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.

Every summer former Highland Park Boy’s Club Staff and members reunite for fellowship, family fun and food.  Activities include music, face painting and games.  The public is invited to attend this free event.

“Bloodshed In The City” is the theme.  The Women of Healing From Both Sides will address the ommunity’s healing after the recent tragedy that focused the eyes of the world on our hometown.

There will be cash prizes for those that strut their stuff or show some skills in the Watch Me Dance or halftime 3-Point contests.

The event was started by Derick Chapman in memorial to his childhood friend and fellow club member Cornelius Mandel “Crank” Halfacre, who died of natural causes died at age 29.  Every summer, Mr. Chapman and a few friends sponsor this community event.

The unit has produced some noteworthy guys like superstar performer Usher and Tennessee wrestling Hall of Fame coach Al Miller.  The club was the place that brought neighborhood guys together and friendships were strengthened, said officials.

Mr. Chapman and his friend “Crank” attended Highland Park Elementary School and Tucker Baptist Church together.  They hung out at the Boy’s Club whenever they could.  Mr. Chapman worked at the unit during the summer and was hired to teach young fathers to become caring and contributing parents.  These two lifelong friends were separated when Mr. Halfacre died in 2004.

Others memorialized Mr. Halfacre at the funeral with claims of being his best friend out in the streets but Mr. Chapman was devastated and emotionally torn to pieces by the loss.  He decided to bring the neighborhood family together at the Highland Park Boy’s Club to remember his brother in a fun time and as a way to speak to the community of the challenges our children face.  The location changed because the new boy’s club unit is not available for outside group events.

Mr. Chapman describes the event as a day of free food, fellowship and fun.  The public is invited to join alums and former staff for this wonderful free family event.  Contact him at 488-2807 or Quenston Coleman at 622-5911 for more information.
