Commissioner Adams Favors Sterling Jetton - And Response

  • Saturday, August 22, 2015

For 36 years two of the finest elected officials, Claude Ramsey and Bill Bennett, have served us as assessor of property.  Before his election as mayor, Claude Ramsey served us well for a period of 14 years as assessor of property.  For many years Bill Bennett served on the Hamilton County Commission and has served 22 years as assessor of property.

We now have the opportunity to select another fine gentlemen with 27 years experience in the assessor’s office.  Sterling Jetton is well qualified, a great citizen and a family man.  Sterling will continue the great service we’ve learned to expect.  Please give your support to Sterling Jetton for assessor of property.

Former Commissioner Adams is right on target.  Let us look at qualifications for the position.  Sterling Jetton is clearly the most qualified candidate to fill the knowledgeable shoes of Bill Bennett.

Assessor of property is an elected office. However, the position requires broad knowledge and experience in the procedural requirements that govern setting property values for the purpose of taxation.  I really hope we get the most qualified assessor, rather than the most politically partisan that wants a six-figure job.

I realize this is a constitutional office in the organization of county government, but I wonder if it should be due to the complex property law and duties of the assessor of property.

It seems to me that we are better served by electing someone with experience in property assessment, appraisal, and with broad knowledge of the appeal and procedural requirements.

I also support Sterling Jetton for assessor of property.
