Mocs "Fundamentally Sound" In 91-Play Scrimmage At Finley Stadium

  • Saturday, August 22, 2015

The Chattanooga Mocs were back at Finley Stadium on Saturday morning, taking part in a 91-play scrimmage on Davenport Field.  The mood was much better after this workout, compared to the last rained-shorted scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 14.

"It looked like, for the most part, we were fundamentally sound," stated head coach Russ Huesman.  "You can judge a scrimmage by how many bodies are on the ground at one time.  It looked like we were moving our feet and running to the ball.

I thought both sides of the ball did some good things.  I was pretty pleased, but until you see the film, you just never know."

There are still a lot of ongoing position battles, but a lot of the established starters got some rest.  Senior quarterback Jacob Huesman was 4/7 passing for 21 yards and a score and ran four times for 13 yards.  Sophomore Alejandro Bennifield and Tyler Roberson took most of the snaps at quarterback.

True freshman Kyle Nalls had a solid day, rushing for 66 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.  His first score was a 44-yard run, while his second was a six-yard scamper on the first-and-goal drill.

Sophomore Richardre Bagley also had some nice numbers that included 45 yards and a TD on five carries.  His scoring run came from 23 yards out.

There were also some standouts on defense, including junior Vantrel McMillan.  He finished with two tackles-for-loss and a hurry.  Sophomore T.J. Jenkins had a break-up and a hurry, while senior Toyvian Brand and sophomore D.J. Prather each added a sack.

Junior linebacker Nakevion Leslie posted a TFL of his own in limited action.  He also received some post-practice praise from Coach Huesman.  "That kid can run.  He can go sideline to sideline.  He probably had 6-7 tackles and he probably only played about 12-13 plays."

Be sure to come out to Meet the Mocs at the Market tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. All 15 of the Mocs teams will be on hand signing autographs and taking photos throughout the day.  Football is there from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The women's soccer team opens their season across the street at Finley Stadium 2:00 p.m. against Austin Peay.

Season tickets are still on sale on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 425-5292.  UTC is No. 8 in the preseason national rankings and hosts No. 7 Jacksonville State in the season opener at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 5.
