City, County To Spend Up To $300,000 To Improve Moccasin Bend Police Firing Range

The city and county will spend up to $300,000 to upgrade the police firing range at Moccasin Bend.

The city and county earlier had made plans for an indoor firing range on E. 11th Street that would have cost over $3 million, but the plug was later pulled on that idea.

Officials said a new portable building will be transported to the Moccasin Bend site.

The project also includes installing a 30-position target system and a 90-foot running man target system.

There will also be a  force on force non-ballistic scenario-based training environment and a training lab.

The speakers and sound system will be upgraded and defective items being utilized at the range will be upgraded.

Also, security and maintenance of the facility will be beefed up, and there will be additional parking.

The facility will be designed not only to serve the Chattanooga Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, but other local and area counties and municipalities.

The city had cleared some buildings at the Farmers Market site and paid an architect $250,000 to draw up plans before it was decided in a later administration to scrap it.

One impetus for the 11th Street project was so additional land could be added to the national archaeological site at historic Moccasin Bend.

County Mayor Coppinger earlier said that may still happen, "but it will be a long, long way down the road."

He noted that the National Park Service had been unwilling to clean up the site, which would have been an expensive cost for the city and county.
