The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball lost a heartbreaker to Valparaiso 2-3 in the season opener and first match of the Chattanooga Classic – Presented by the Chattanooga Classic.
UTC set the pace with a 25-16 first set win. Valparaiso clinched the second set 25-23. The Mocs convincingly won the third set 25-15. Then, Valpariaso won the next two close sets, 25-22 and 16-14.
Despite the loss, four Mocs boasted double digits in kills. Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) and Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) led the team in kills with 15. Briana Reid posted 14, and Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) hit 11.
Wieser tallied a team-best .519 hitting percentage, which helped add to the Mocs collective .290 percentage. The Crusaders hitting percentage totaled to .156.
Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) posted a team-best of 56 assists.
Additionally, Chattanooga marked 12.0 total team blocks, in comparison to Valparaiso’s 1.0.
The Mocs play Saturday at 12:30 p.m., against Troy and Eastern Kentucky at 7:00 p.m., in Maclellan Gym to wrap up the two-day tournament. Live video and stats are available for both matches.
