Elon's Kelly Siewers scored a pair of second half goals to lift the visiting Phonix to a 2-0 in against the UTC women’s soccer team
Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Finley Stadium. The Mocs drop to 0-3 on the year while the Phoenix improve to 2-1 overall.
For the third straight match, the Mocs did not allow a first-half goal. However, the Phoenix were able to strike twice after intermission for the win.
“We’ve been competitive in all three games,” Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. “We need to get results. We’ve got to find some way to grind it out.”
Siewers first goal came on a header off a pass from Sydney Schilling in the 53rd minute followed by a goal in the 84th minute assisted by Nyah Spearman.
Five minutes later, UTC sophomore McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) fired a rocket from deep and it was knocked over the bar by Elon keeper Hanna Macaulay. The Mocs had six shots on the day with three on goal.
“McKenzie had a great strike there at the end,” McKinney said. “The keeper tapped it over the bar. Skylar Brewer has knocked on the door a few times and Sam Hogan has created some chances for us.”
Sophomore Abby Linder (Germantown, Tenn.) and junior Ashley Simmons (Hixson) each had a shot on goal for the Mocs and junior keeper Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) had one save in the game.
“We’ve seen improvements,” McKinney said. “But it’s got to start showing. Seeing improvement in performance is one thing, but I don’t think we can be satisfied with that. We want results. We want to find some way to win games.”
The Mocs will hit the road for a four-match road stretch that begins Friday night in Nashville against Lipscomb. The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. Eastern time at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
