A Celebration Of The Vote That Changed History Set For Aug. 27

  • Wednesday, August 5, 2015

A Celebration of the Vote That Changed History will be held Aug. 27, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at the GPS Frierson Auditorium.

For decades groups of women worked petitioning leaders across the United States to secure their right to vote as full participants in national, state and local decisions that affected them. This right was affirmed in August 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  More than 26 million women had their citizenship affirmed and gained a mechanism to empower themselves, their families and their communities.  This will be a celebration to recognize the influence that women continue to exercise each time they cast a vote, said officials.

Opening remarks will be by Autumn Graves and Carol Berz.  There will be a presentation of the 2004 film "Iron-Jawed Angels."  Iron-Jawed Angels is the story of a group of young women, led by Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and her friend Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), who put their lives on the line to fight for American women's right to vote.

This event is open to the public.  Registration is preferred and available here

Table displays will be provided by GPS and CGLA.  Voter registration will be provided by the League of Women Voters and Daughters of the American Revolution. Decorations will be provided by Avery Patten of the Patten Group.  Social media is provided by the Women's Fund of Greater Chattanooga.
