Covenant Women Falls 2-1 To Meredith

  • Saturday, September 19, 2015
With a goal in the final minute of regulation, Meredith defeated Covenant 2-1 in USA South action on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard.

The Lady Scots drop to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in USA South play, while the Avenging Angels improve to 4-3 and 2-0. Meredith is the defending USA South co-regular season champions.

Covenant put the first goal on the board in the 32nd minute, as Natalie Smith scored on a header off of a Ruth Terry corner kick. The goal was the junior's first collegiate score, and Terry's first assist of the season.
However, it was one of only two shots on goal by Covenant.

Meredith went scoreless through the first half, though they put five shots on goal. 10 minutes into the second half, Jessica Wallace tied the match with her sixth goal of the season, assisted by Kirstie King.

With less than a minute left in play, Meredith established a lead that the Lady Scots had no time to answer. Megan Luke took a free kick from barely 10 yards from inside the midfield line and put it into the box, and Cassie Padilla headed in the game-winner for her second goal of the season.

Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay made a season-high nine saves in the losing effort, bringing her season total up to 24 on the year. Jaisa Loch of Meredith made one save in the victory. Meredith held a 17-5 advantage in shots. Smith took two of Covenant's five attempts.

The Lady Scots will face Greensboro on the road on Friday, Sept. 25. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
