BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Adam Brett Walker and the Lookouts upended the Barons 7-1 in Birmingham's final home game of the regular season Tuesday night at Regions Field.
Walker was 2-for-4 Tuesday night with a pair of RBI, and crushed his Southern League-leading 30th home run of the season. The powerful Chattanooga offense was accompanied by a six-inning gem from starting pitcher D.J. Baxendale.
Baxendale allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four Birmingham batters. As a whole, the Lookouts' pitching staff limited the Barons to just five hits and struck out 10 through the nine-inning show.
Birmingham starter Myles Jaye's search for his league-leading 13th win of the year yielded his eighth loss of the season. Jaye (12-8, 3.24 ERA) saw the tone set in the second as Walker hit a solo home run to put the Lookouts up 1-0.
The Barons got a run back in the second following a pair of hits and a wild pitch from Baxendale to score Jacob May from third, but the momentum took a major shift in the third. The Lookouts tagged Jaye for four runs on three hits afterwards, taking a 5-1 advantage.
Doug Mientkiewicz's squad did not let up after the big innings, going on to put up two runs in the fourth, extending their lead to the eventual 7-1 final score.
Walker's home run was one of two extra-base hits in the game. Birmingham's Tony Thomas delivered a double, but no more Barons could muster more than a single. Tim Anderson, Brian Fletcher, Ryan Leonards and Dallas Tarleton accounted for the remaining four home-team hits.
Birmingham ended the night with nine runners left on base, and the bats were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Five batters came up empty with runners in scoring position with two outs.
