UTC Women Tie Wofford 2-2

  • Friday, September 25, 2015
For the fourth straight game, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team went into extra time and for the second straight match, earned a draw, tying Wofford 2-2 in double overtime.

Sophomores McKenzie Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) and Abby Linder (Germantown, Tenn.) each found the net, but it wouldn’t be enough for the Mocs who move to 2-6-2 on the year and 0-0-1 in Southern Conference action.

It was the second straight overtime match and fourth on the year for the Terriers who are 1-3-3 overall and 0-0-1 in league action in the SoCon opener for both teams.

Rachel Fenner got the Terriers on the board in the seventh minute when her free kick from the left side slipped past Chattanooga keeper Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) to make it 1-0.

It wouldn’t take long, however, before the Mocs got on the board with a solid strike from Gregg at the 15 minute mark of the game.
Her strike from the top of the 18-yard box, assisted by Emily Moseley (Nashville, Tenn.) tied the match 1-1. That score would stand through halftime.

In the 63rd minute, the Mocs took the lead when Wofford keeper Mayson Liner charged at senior Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.). Brewer, however, sent a pass into the box where Linder was able to pick it up and saunter to the goal for the score to make it 2-1 at the 62:33 mark of the match.

Wofford kept at it and managed to knot it up 2-2 at the 83:03 mark of the match. Chattanooga’s defense was letting the ball get back to UTC’s keeper in the box, but before Emig could scoop it up, Mary Beth Bleekrode got to it and sent a shot into an open goal for the tie.

Both teams tallied five shots in both overtime periods but neither could make them hit home. Wofford outshot UTC 29-14 with a 13-6 shots on goal advantage. Emig made 11 saves for the Mocs while Liner had just one save and Alex Carroll, who started in net for Wofford, had three.

Linder and sophomore Peyton McCollum (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) each led Chattanooga with five shots. Linder had three on goal to McCollum’s two. Brewer had two shots with one assist as did Moseley.

Chattanooga will remain home to host SoCon leader Furman Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. The game kicks off at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
