UTC's Chason, Davenport Named SoCon Volleyball Players Of The Week

  • Monday, September 28, 2015
Coming off two Southern Conference wins, the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team earned SoCon weekly honors offensively and defensively for Sept. 21-27. Senior libero Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and junior outside hitter Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) won the offensive award, the league office announced on Monday.

"They both had an outstanding weekend," head coach Travis Filar stated. "I know they would credit their teammates. Their success is tied to the team and everyone around them doing their job to the best of their ability."

Chason posted a season-high 37 digs against UNCG on Friday, in addition to 14 versus Western Carolina.
Over the two matches, she averaged 7.29 per set. Chason is ranked 62nd nationally in digs per set with 4.70. She also boasts a team-high 19 service aces.

"Catherine's confidence and level of play continues to soar, as she has been so consistent and disciplined," explained Filar. "She is running our serve receive and defense and is always willing to do whatever it is to make the team better."

Her strong performances from the back court play a big part in the Mocs leading the SoCon in digs per set and being ranked seventh out of NCAA Division I teams (17.28) as of Sept. 27.

Davenport led UTC's offense in both matches last weekend. She recorded a .429 attack percentage and season-best 17 kills against the Spartans and 15 paired with a .395 hitting percentage while facing the Catamounts. Davenport has tallied 143 kills, averaging a team-best 3.04 per set. The UNCG matchup was her third time recording no attack errors.

"Allie is establishing herself as a force on the outside as an attacker and blocker," said Filar. "She has become a real point scorer and very efficient for our dynamic offense."

She has helped the squad lead the league in kills per set (14.11) and become ranked No. 25 nationally.

Chattanooga is on a nine-match winning streak, the longest since 1999, with a 13-2 record, the best start since 1986.

The Mocs are back in action Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at Wofford. They return home for a matchup with Mercer Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Maclellan Gym.
