Host Baylor spotted GPS a pair of goals, then rallied for two goals of its own in the final eight minutes to gain a 2-2 tie Tuesday night in a D-II Middle/East Region soccer match.

On the eve of Alumni Weekend for McCallie and Baylor and playing before an overflow crowd under the lights, the visiting Bruisers scored in the first five minutes of each half for the 2-0 advantage, but the Red Raiders’ Kamryn Bloh (on a pass from Carter Cooper) put a shot in the left side of the goal in the 72nd minute followed by a successful corner kick by freshman Maddie Reap three minutes later to even the match.

“On my first corner kick I didn’t hit it well (went in the side of the net), so the last one I needed to get it up in the air and it went in,” said a smiling Reap who also scored on a corner kick in a 3-2 loss to Father Ryan.

“When my shot went in tonight I thought, ‘I can’t believe I did it again.’”

A pair of freshman combined for the Bruisers first goal as Mya McGee assisted Lane Lawrence for the 1-0 lead, while Lawrence then passed to junior Emily Large who found an open goal for the 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

“We played well, and generated scoring chances, but left some on the table tonight,” said GPS coach Patrick Winecoff. “We made some mistakes on the Baylor goals, but give them credit for coming back when down 2-0.”

Asked about the two late goals, Baylor coach Curtis Blair said,” we had to change things so we put four forwards up top and hoped to get some chances. If it doesn’t work and they get another goal what’s the difference between losing 2-0, 3-0 or 5-0.

“I told our players at halftime that to come back we really had to grind it out and they did. It was a great comeback for us at home.”
