Hattiesburg, MS. – The Dalton State women’s golf team (314-303=617) captured their second fall golf tournament of the season Tuesday as Caroline Griffin earns medalist honors.
The Roadrunners erased a seven stroke first day deficit to overtake the hosts from William Carey University (307-311=618) in the Carey Collegiate Fall Classic at Par 72, 5956 yards Canebrake Country Club.
Griffin (78-73=151) defeated Jennifer Nguyen (74-77=151) of Southern Mississippi in a play-off.
Dalton State’s Katie Dalton (75-78=153) finished tied for third with Heather Nail (77-76=153) of the University of Mobile.
Julia McQuilken (77-78=155), Erika Wardzinski (84-74=158) and Ashley McDonald (88-78=166) completed the Roadrunner team scoring. Rachel Rebne (86-83=169) and Carly Shane (84-90=174) also competed in the 48-player tournament.
“I am really proud of the girls today,” said DS Coach Jim McGrew. “We dug ourselves a hole Monday, but responded like champions to erase a huge deficit and beat a really good William Carey team on their home course. This will help us as we continue to build toward the post season. I’m proud of Caroline for getting the win in dramatic fashion on the first playoff hole.”
The tournament featured a field of all Southern States Athletic Conference teams. The University of Mobile (321-329=650) finished third. Loyola of New Orleans (332-332=664) was fourth. Also competing were Brenau University (333-334=677), Bethel – TN (365-352=717 and Martin Methodist (730).
Dalton State will compete next in the Thomas University Women’s Fall Classic on Oct. 12 and 13 at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.
