Frances A. McWhirter, 89, died on Monday August 31, 2015 at a local hospital. 

She was born November 24, 1925 to the union of Caiaphas and Lucy Arnold in Chattanooga. She was a graduate of Howard High School.

Frances was a member of Cleage's Chapel Church where she attended until her health failed. Frances was the secretary of the Lay-Council, President of the Stewardess Board, and the secretary of the Parent- Body Missionary Society. She was the first black retail clothing buyer in a major department store in Chattanooga. She was a graduate of the Miller Bros. Management and Marketing Program. She was also a graduate of C. J. Walker College of Cosmetology. 

She was married to the late James Andrew Mcwhirter, who preceded her in death by nine years.

She is survived by one son, Lee Andrew McWhirter; one grandson, Joshua T. McWhirter; a faithful and loving caregiver, Carol Sorrell; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and the family will receive friends from 6–7 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
