  • Saturday, September 5, 2015

Varnell, Ga. – The Dalton State men’s cross country team dominated the seven team field in the first Dalton State Twilight Invitational Cross Country meet at historic Prater’s Mill on Friday.

Defending Southern States Athletic Conference individual champion Geoffrey Kipchumba showed local fans just how good he is. With a time of 18:42, he was way ahead of second place Spencer Head of Dalton (19:20) at the end.

The Roadrunners completed the victory by placing five of their top runners in the first eight spots.

Dalton tallied 28 points. Bryan College of Dayton, TN was second (66 points) and defending SSAC champs William Carey had 77.

“The men exceeded all expectations for this point in their training cycle,” said Coach Andy Meyer “We’ve done nothing but basic fitness work. We had a couple of kids running hurt that ran more on heart than fitness. The men beat several quality teams including two ranked ahead of us.”

Although he Meyer is happy with the current fitness level, he cautions that “we have a lot of hard work ahead of us. He also expressed appreciation to fans who came out to support Roadrunner cross country teams.

The next Dalton State meet will in the North Georgia Invitational in Gainesville on September 19th at 9:00 a.m.
