Columbia, KY - The Dalton State golf team came from behind on Saturday to defeat homestanding Lindsey Wilson in the Blue Raider Golf Classic at The Pines at Linesey Wilson's Par 71, 6628 yards course.
The Roadrunners had been down by seven strokes after Friday's first day of the two-day, 36 hole tournament. While Dalton State (281-277=558) improved by four strokes on Saturday, Lindsey Wilson (274-290=564) shot a +6 to finish second. Union College (285-285=570) finished the tournament in third place.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene (282-291=573) was fourth. Millsap College (286-289=575) and Lindsey Wilson (B) (282-293=575) were tied for fifth.
Indiana Wesleyan (287-291=578) finished seventh. Campbellsville (KY) (289-291=580), Bryan College (292-295=587), Brerea University (309-284=593), West Virginia Tech (304-297=601), Huntington University (303-299=602, Bryan College (B) (305-305=610, Lindsey Wilson (C) (308-305=613) and Berea College 306-315=621) complete the 15-team field.
"I'm really proud of our guys attitude and the way they came out and competed today," said Dalton State Coach Ben Rickett. "We knew we had our work cut out for us and they responded like champions. It was a total team effort and I'm proud of how they all played. Congratulations to Sean (Elliott) on another great tournament as he picked up right where he left off last year. This was a good start to the season but we know we have a lot of work left to get where we want to be."
The Roadrunner's Sean Elliott won a play-off to become the low medalist. Elliott (66-66=132) and Charlie Phillips (64-68=132) of Mt. Vernon Nazarene finished tied for low score. Dalton State's Chase Jones (72-69=141) finished tied for 8th individually. Adam Morris (74-69=143) and Levi Nix (72-71=143) were in a tie for 14th. Dalton Johnson (73-76=149) was tied for 43rd in the 81 golfer field.
Dalton State plays next weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at The Farm golf club.
