Mercy Junction Justice And Peace Center To Hold Social Justice Revival And St. Andrews Church Homecoming

  • Wednesday, September 9, 2015
Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center kicks off its first-ever Social Justice Revival and St. Andrews Church Homecoming on Friday evening with a performance to celebrate recent strides toward equality, from the SCOTUS marriage equality ruling to Chattanooga's passage of the non-discrimination ordinance.

Rev. Yolanda and the Old Time Gospel Hour will begin at 8 p.m. in the center's sanctuary at 1918 Union Ave., Chattanooga TN 37404.
The rest of the weekend includes freedom songs, Social Justice Sunday School, games, auctions and more.

Rev. Yolanda  is a 2015 inductee into The Blues Hall of Fame and 2015/ 2014 recipient of The MAC Award (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs) for Best Drag Artist. She was inducted into the GLBT Hall of Fame for Activism, Art Excellence and Community Awareness in 2005. It was around this time that Yolanda began a spiritual journey which led her to One Spirit Interfaith Seminary where she became Rev.Yolanda, an ordained Interfaith Minister in June of 2011.

Rev. Yolanda’s Old Time Gospel Hour --- the live, autobiographical Gospel Music show -- was realized in January of 2012. Rev. Yolanda is an eccentric, and ecstatic performer with a southern rock, country gospel style. She brings her message of Non-Duality into every event by merging GLBT and mainstream popular culture with integrated spirituality. With a soulful voice, a message of oneness, great costumes, and a wicked sense of humor, her shows and CDs emphasize love, beautiful melodies, interesting stories, and a bit of inspiration.

All of the Social Justice Revival events are free (though free will offerings will be taken throughout the weekend) and open to the public. For those who are attending the Rev. Yolanda concert and who wish to purchase advance tickets online, this option is available at mercyjunctioncenter.org and those purchasing advance tickets will receive a free CD on the night of the show.

The revival continues on Saturday with Mercy Junction building partner, Justice Arts, being part of Gallery Hop 2015. Artists whose studios are in the center will be exhibiting their work throughout the building from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The interfaith People's Sermon service begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the front foyer of the center. This week the People's Sermon will be examining the upcoming fall holy seasons of different faith communities.
On Saturday evening, at 8 p.m., another Mercy Junction building partner, Peace Collective, will lead Fire and Freedom Songs! There will be a fire pit in the center's side parking lot with vegan marshmallows and hot dogs to roast. Peace Collective, along with Rev. Yolanda, will be leading a singing school of traditional Freedom Songs around the fire.

The revival continues on Sunday morning with breakfast at 9 a.m. in the back parking lot of the center, welcome at 9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary, and Social Justice Sunday School beginning at 9:45 a.m. There will be Sunday School classes for preschool, elementary, high school and adult age groups. Worship will begin at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary.

At noon, the service will dismiss for an old-fashion dinner on the ground. Mercy Junction will be providing a vegan entree, as well as coffee, tea and water. Those attending, are asked, if able, to bring a vegan/vegetarian side dish or desert, and lawn chairs.

Throughout the afternoon there will be live music and old-fashion games with prizes, such as horse shoes, three-legged races, bean bag toss and cake walks. There will also be a history tent to present and record the history of St. Andrews Church.

"Jars for Justice and Pots for Peace: The People's Auction" will be set up for final bidding in the chapel of the center at noon. Bids will be accepted up until 2 p.m., at which time winning bidders will be announced.

Mercy Junction Justice and Peace Center is a new ministry of the Presbytery of East Tennessee and operates the former St. Andrews Center at 1918 Union Ave. in Chattanooga.
